Join the Korean Catholic Community for a Bicentennial Cultural Day celebrating the life and witness of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean-born Catholic priest, and the rich history of Catholicism in Korea.

The day will include a short film and seminar on St. Andrew Kim Taegon and the Korean Catholic Community, followed by Mass at 10:30 AM. After Mass, all are invited to enjoy traditional Korean food, fellowship, and recreational activities featuring traditional Korean games.

This celebration is part of the Bicentennial Celebration of Catholicism in Hawaiʻi, inviting the whole Diocese to encounter the faith, culture, and witness of the Korean Catholic Community. All are welcome.

On Saturday, October 3, the Diocese of Honolulu will carry the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of the capital, from Sts. Peter and Paul Church to the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, in honor of the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi. This 3.2-mile Eucharistic Procession is a public witness of faith woven into the Diocese's Bicentennial year.

Sts. Peter and Paul ʻOhana warmly invites the Diocese's deacons to take part in the procession and to help carry the monstrance at intervals along the route. Deacons serving in this liturgical role should bring their own alb and white stole and RSVP as soon as possible so assignments can be coordinated in advance.

For those unable to walk the full distance, Sr. Alicia Lau, OSF will offer a reflection at the Co-Cathedral at 10:30 AM on Franciscan spirituality and the witness of Hawaiʻi's saints. The procession is expected to arrive at 11:30 AM, followed by confessions, prayers, and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, presided over by Bishop Michael Castori.

Pilgrims who drive to Sts. Peter and Paul and walk the procession may take a return bus from the Co-Cathedral beginning at 12:15 PM. Further transportation details will follow.

As the Diocese of Honolulu marks two hundred years of Catholic faith in the Hawaiian Islands, the Chuukese Catholic Community of Hawaii invites the faithful of every island to a two-day celebration honoring the Micronesian Catholic family and its place in the story of the Church in Hawaiʻi. Gathering brothers and sisters from Chuuk, Yap, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Guam, Saipan, Palau, and the Marshall Islands, the celebration is offered as a tribute to the Diocese of Honolulu and a witness to the way the Gospel, carried across the Pacific, has taken root in the hearts of a people.

The celebration opens on Saturday, October 17, with a full day of cultural, social, and religious festivities at Kapiʻolani Regional Park. From 9:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening, the park will come alive with traditional dance, song, and attire from across Micronesia, alongside presentations tracing the history of the Catholic Church in the islands and the growth of Micronesian communities within the Diocese of Honolulu. The day will also include conversations about community life and integration, informational booths with resources for families, and complimentary local and island foods.

The celebration reaches its fullness on Sunday, October 18, with a concluding Mass at 2:00 PM at St. Elizabeth Church in ʻAiea. The liturgy will reflect the traditions of the islands, incorporating cultural expressions that give voice to God’s presence in the beliefs and values of the Micronesian faithful. All the faithful of the Diocese of Honolulu are warmly invited to join in this Mass of thanksgiving.

Preparations are underway among the faithful of Chuuk and Yap, with the planning committee seeking to engage every Micronesian community in the islands so the celebration may be full, meaningful, and truly shared. Pastors and parish leaders are invited to help spread the word and connect interested members with the planning committee.

Bishop Joseph A. Espaillat II, affectionately known as “Bishop Joe,” was born in New York City to Dominican immigrant parents. Ordained a priest in 2003, he has served in various pastoral and leadership roles, including Director of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of New York and Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in the Bronx. Appointed auxiliary bishop by Pope Francis in January 2022, he became the first Dominican-American Catholic bishop and, at the time, the youngest bishop in the United States. Each year on the second Sunday of July, the Catholic Church observes Sea Sunday — a day set apart by the Vatican's Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development to pray for and recognize all those who work at sea, their families, and those who support them.

In Hawaiʻi, that call carries special weight. The islands depend on maritime commerce and are home to one of the nation's top ten fishing ports, sustained by foreign longline fishermen who endure long separations from their families and risk their lives to bring fresh catch to our tables. Many of these workers have limited access to social, spiritual, medical, and economic services — a reality the Apostleship of the Sea–Hawaiʻi works to change year-round.

This year's Sea Sunday falls during the Bicentennial Year, deepening its significance as the Diocese reflects on two centuries of Catholic mission across these islands — a mission that has always extended beyond the sanctuary to the margins, to the vulnerable, and to those whose labor sustains us all.

Most Rev. Larry Silva, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Honolulu, will preside over a Holy Mass on the lawn at Pier 36, where Honolulu's working waterfront meets the Pacific. A fellowship dinner with local seafarers will follow.

To mark 200 years of Catholic faith in Hawaiʻi, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace is hosting the Cathedral Bicentennial Series — a set of six presentations running from July 2026 through May 2027.

The series traces the history of the Catholic Church in the islands, from its earliest mission days through the bishops, saints, and struggles that shaped the Diocese of Honolulu.

The opening presentation, “From the First Mass to the Bicentennial,” recalls the first Catholic Mass celebrated in Hawaiʻi and sets the stage for the two centuries of faith that followed.

The event begins with an 11:00 AM historical presentation, followed by a 12:00 PM Holy Mass and light refreshments at the Kamiano Center.
